Cuban and U.S. specialists set out on a joint expedition to the Coasts of Florida’s Southern Keys

UNITED STATES, May 22, 2018.- On May 17- 22, 2018, Cuban and U.S. specialists set out on an expedition to the keys in the South of Florida to conduct a geological survey of the coasts and identify any possible land movement in the area caused by tsunamis and hurricanes. The Cuban team was represented by three researches from the National Center for Seismological Research, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (Citma). The U.S. was represented by the United States Geological Survey.

During this geological expedition, ideas, working methods and viewpoints were shared to document tectonic deformations, changes in the sea level and coastal flooding caused mainly by tsunamis, setting them apart from those caused by storms.

This important expedition allowed both parties to develop a valuable exchange of experiences and to gain better tools to warn and face natural disasters within the framework of mutual collaboration.

The exercise was carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2016, between Citma and the U.S. Department of the Interior for cooperation in the exchange of information on seismic records and related geologic data.(Cubaminrex-DGEEUU-Embacuba Estados Unidos)
