Cuba and the United States sign Treaty on the Delimitation of the Continental Shelf in the Eastern Polygon of the Gulf of Mexico

WASHINGTON, January 18, 2017- This Wednesday afternoon, a Treaty on the Delimitation of the Continental Shelf in the Eastern Polygon of the Gulf of Mexico beyond 200 nautical miles was signed in the headquarters of the US Department of State, in Washington D.C. On behalf of Cuba, H.E. José Ramón Cabañas Rodríguez, Ambassador of Cuba to the United States signed the treaty while Mari Carmen Aponte, Senior Advisor on Western Hemisphere Affairs in the Department of State signed for the United States.

With the signing of this treaty, in line with the International Law, the Continental Shelf between the Republic of Cuba and the United States of America was delimited beyond 200 nautical miles. This document provides legal certainty to the Parties to exercise their rights of jurisdiction and sovereignty in that maritime area.
